Ada(Yinyin) Wang photographers
Write 200-300 words about each one of the books describing the “style" of the photographer
Think about the camera settings, relationship to subject, etc.
How they photograph
Robert H. McCabe—-
“weekend in Havana”
Robert H. McCabe was an American educator and the President Emeritus of Miami-Dade Community College. In the book “weekend in Havana”, the photographer Robert McCabe uses his camera to capture the a “real” life in Havana by catching ordinary people’s extraordinary moment. From his photographs, I can tell his love of travel while he made good use of Rolleiflex camera.
In my opinion, I think Robert’s photographs always contain some kind of story behind the camera because he is good at capturing good moments of people. On the other hand, McCabe is also good at using the balance of color forms and lights by using color contrast and the shadow. Moreover, Robert McCabe uses black and white well by making the shadow so he can make the character more obvious. However, there still one thing I don't like about him which is he always use the same method for photography so I prefer more method of changing in my own photograph.
In addition, I think the way he photograph is interactive with people while he takes the picture. Therefore, I think his relationship to the subject is he as the tourist and the subject are always the local people.
Robert Lebeck
“Tokyo”
Robert Lebeck was an award-winning German photojournalist. In Robert Lebeck’s work, I can tell he always photographs people’s daily life of moving moment. Such as when people are talking, moving and eating. Robert Lebeck sometimes use the long exposures with Lerica to take pictures.
I like Rober Lebeck’s work because his photographs look so real; not like some of master’s work, they tend to make the models do certain pose then make the photograph. In Rober Lebeck’s work, instead of asking people to make some poses, he “goes into people’s life”, find out their happiness, sadness, and sickness, etc. However, one thing I don't like about his work is he sometimes put too many objects in one photograph which make me don't know which subject I should focus on.
In my opinion, I think he often talks to his “models” first even becomes their friend since I saw lots of interaction between Lebeck and his models. I think the relationship between Lebeck and his subject is sometimes friends, or people that like him, who gets along with him.
Rineke Dijkstra
‘Beach Portraits”
Rineke Dijkstra is a Dutch photographher who lives and works in Masterdom. In the early days she likes to use the 35 mm camera which is good at taking portray photographs. In the book “Beach Portraits”, Rineke Dijkstra uses exactly same background which is beach to take people’s portray but only changes the time setting(so sometimes he changes the time that take people’s photograph).
In her book the “Beach Portraits”, she uses the various color contrasts of different people’s skin color, different style of clothes. Moreover, Rineke Dijkstra takes pictures of different age of people and sometimes he took people’s self portray some times he took group photographs. I think in Rineke Dijkstra’s photographs, he tries to uses the same setting and background in order to emphasize each person’s own characteristics. In his beach portraits, each person looks so obvious and impressive since the background is too sample so people are always only focus on the main characters. One thing I do not like about Rineke Dijkstra is I think his same background setting was too pale. the color was gray and dark. Moreover, the idea of not changing the background setting was creative but when I look at dozens of same setting pictures, I think the reader would get tried and get bored.
In my opinion, i think the relationship between Rineke Dijkstra and the models are strangers who are walking on the beach so Rineke Dijkstra would ask them if they can take pictures. In addition, I think Rineke Dijkstra must asks his models intentionally not smile at the camera.
