Tianjiao Wang-Three Photographers
Jork Weismann
Jork Weismann is a fashion photographer from Austria. Jork Weismann is able to capture the cinematic moment of the people he is photographing. He is known to be a fashion photographer. At the same time, his photography has been used for commercials and advertisement. In the collection of "Asleep at the Chateau", which Jork Weismann published in 2012, he photographs a variety of different celebrities when they are asleep at the Chateau, Los Angeles. The entire collection portrays the quietness and calmness on the faces of people when they fall asleep. His photography is always really clear and simple. He chooses the simple settings of the rooms, the simple outfits for his models, as well as the simple lighting inside the rooms. What I appreciate the most from Jork Weismann's works is the ability he has of capturing the peaceful moment. I really enjoy the theme of "asleep".
Maia Flore
Maia Flore is a French photographer who was born in 1988 and currently lives in Paris. In 2010, she graduated from Ecole des Gobelins and later, in 2011, joined Agence VU'. Maia Flore loves to play around the idea of reality and her own imagination. Therefore, her works often contain the sense of surrealistic. I personally really love a quote from her, "my inspiration are things that I actually want to experience. I live my world vicariously through my photos". Through both of her words and her photography, I see the combination of real and fake. In the collection of "Rememories", Maia Flore is able to display the freedom of being a creator. She uses fresh colors and makes the audience feel delighted. She manages to blend in the people with the background scene naturally. Maia Flore makes the model have some of the really odd poses; even though the pose itself is kind of odd and awkward, it doesn't seem odd at all when it is in the photograph. I love how Maia Flore demonstrates a world of the reality as well as her imagination. This book inspires me to think out of the box.
Boris Mikhailov
Boris Mikhailov was born on 25 August 1938 in the Soviet Union. People introduce him as "one of the most important artists to have emerged from the former USSR." He has been lived in his hometown Kharkiv, Ukraine for a long time. Boris Mikhailov is a self-taught photographer and actually has a degree in engineering. His philosophy of photographing combines the idea of conceptual art and social documentary. The photography collection that I chose from Boris Mikhailov is "Suzi et Ceter". The overall color of his collection is light yellow with buff. Boris Mikhailov illustrates his girlfriends and the daily life in his hometown Kharkiv, Ukraine. I can see a sense of reminiscent and nostalgic from his photographs. In addition, Boris Mikhailov makes his photographs with an old film effect. Therefore, his works seem to have a sense of the age and history. What I love the most about Boris Mikhailov's photographs is the overall buff color and the scene he is depicting. Although some of his works do not make me feel comfortable to look at, I still appreciate the way he is doing photographs. I think Boris Mikhailov successfully displays the life in his hometown Kharkiv, Ukraine, Soviet Union.
